The project was divided into five phases.
The installation costs are considerable but the running costs are minimal due to the use of free on-site renewable energies. The Government Feed in Tariff and Renewable Heat Incentive payments for electricity and heat generated from renewable sources also help.
The project started in November 2009 and was completed in July 2016.
Phase 1
Phase 1 started in November 2009 and was completed in March 2011.
It consisted of –
- Strengthening the main roof to accept the weight of solar panels and a new ceiling.
- Installation of 129 solar panels with associated control systems.
- Installation of electronic public display panel to illustrate the energy generated by the solar panels.
- Connection to the National Grid for the export of electricity.
- Reforming and insulation of main ceiling.
- Secondary Glazing of high windows.
- Fitting of new rain water guttering and down pipes
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the project started in June 2011 and was completed in November 2012.
It consisted of –
- Construction of a glazed thermal lobby at the main entrance.
- Construction of a gently sloping access to the thermal lobby.
- Installing two pairs of automatic double doors in the thermal lobby to enable independent disabled access.
- Insulation of remaining ceilings
- Building work to remove the cause of damp.
Phase 3
Phase 3 of the project started in January 2013 and was completed in August 2014.
It consisted of-
- Removal of old boilers and wall radiators.
- Lifting of floors and excavating to a lower level.
- Laying floor insulation and screed bedding.
- Laying 400 square metres of new limestone flooring.
- Installing new gas boiler.
Phase 4
Phase 4 of the project started in May 2015 and was completed in October 2015.
It consisted of –
- Glazing-off north part of church to create a new Meeting Room.
- Installing overhead lighting.
- Buying new furniture to enable the room to be used for meetings and events.
Phase 5
Phase 5 , the last phase of the project, was to extract heat from the ground. It started in November 2015 and was completed in July 2016.
It consisted of –
- Installing a Ground Source Heat Pump.
- Drilling 150 metre deep boreholes.
- Connecting pump and boreholes to the under floor heating system.
- Installing control systems.
